How It Works
Your GA4 property already records what customers do with each product. Merchandiser reads these numbers through the Google Analytics Data API and stores them with the product. Sorting rules and Merchandiser AI then use them to order your collections.
The connection is read-only. Merchandiser adds no tag to your site and changes nothing in your property.
What Merchandiser Reads
- Views
- How many times each item was viewed.
- Add to cart
- How many times each item was added to a cart.
- Purchases
- How many units of each item were purchased.
- Revenue
- The item revenue of each product.
- Conversion rate
- The purchaser conversion rate of each item.
Each metric is read for three periods: the last day, the last week and the last month. These are the ranking signals a sorting rule can use.
Matching Items to Products
GA4 reports these numbers per item ID. Merchandiser matches the item ID to a product by its SKU or by another identifier of the product, such as its ERP code.
The item IDs in your e-commerce events therefore have to be IDs that also exist in your catalog. We check this with you during set-up.
What You Provide
- A GA4 property with e-commerce events. Product views, add-to-carts and purchases have to be sent with their items.
- The property ID.
- Viewer access for Merchandiser. You add the Google account we send you to the property with the Viewer role.
If You Do Not Use GA4
GA4 is the usual source of views and add-to-carts, and it is not the only source of sales. Sales can be read from your store platform, and your own systems can send online and in-store sales through the product metrics API.
